FYI, this was the first photo i took; i could’ve put more effort in to cleaning up my fingers a little better, but i didn’t catch how bad they still were until the flash hit them, and i was lazy.
so i’m pretty psyched with how this turned out. it was way messy and KIND OF expensive [when you see the product list, you’ll understand; none of the colors used today are ones i typically use so they all had to be bought new], but it was really easy and turned out great!
first, the products:
1. o.p.i. base coat
2. china glaze in white out
3. china glaze in pool party
4. china glaze in yellow polka dot bikini
5. china glaze in in the lime light [neon]
6. o.p.i. top coat
the white base took three coats, but i think most people would be okay with two; i tend to layer another coat on rather than start over when i make little mistakes.
as far as technique goes, i took the route of diluting the colors in acetone and splattering with a small paint brush. i’ve seen other tutorials where they spray polish through a straw, but that makes splatters a little more gloppy and opaque than i’d prefer. plus, i could see it ending poorly.
leo has some surprisingly great ideas for improving on my technique for next time [he really likes watching me do my nails!] so i’m really looking forward to trying this again with different color combinations. i saw one halloween mani where they made it look more like blood splatter, and it was totally awesome.

Still needs a bit more cleaning up, but I’m pretty psyched with how well it turned out. leo had some surprisingly great ideas for other techniques to try next time, so I’m already excited for next time.
Now the products:
1. o.p.i. Natural nail base coat
2. China glaze in white on white
3. China glaze in pool party
4. China glaze in yellow polka dot bikini
5. China glaze in in the lime light (neon)
6. o.p.i. Top coat
I sped up the process with my favorite discovery of the day: ulta professional nail dry spray. I’ve tried other sprays before, but this worked awesome, smelled like fucking baby powder, and was like $3.
As far as techniques go, I went the route where you dilute with acetone and splatter with a small paintbrush. I’ve seen techniques where they blow polish through straws, but it goes on too thick, gloppy, and opaque for my tastes.
It was a more expensive and messy nail experiment than I’m used to. But it was totally easy and I’m really thrilled with the results.

My first attempt at a glitter gradient. Turned out pretty well and was surprisingly easy!
First I applied a base coat—sally hansen’s ultimate shield—and let that dry completely. Then, using a cosmetic sponge, I applied some china glaze in liquid leather, just to the tips of my nails. I just used the sponge to thin it out as I got further up nail, making sure the tips were opaque. Then, still using the sponge, I applied my glitter. I used ulta in pinata-yada-yada. I made sure it was super-concentrated at the tips and used the sponge to apply a really thin coat further up the nail, so it was graduated. When that dried I did one more layer of the glitter at the very tips, and then another layer of ultimate shield.
The thing I like abut glitter is that it’s really forgiving. It dries really fast and doesn’t require a perfectly even hand. I’m looking forward to trying this again with different color and glitter combinations.
